We are pleased to be participating in the design of McAllen’s latest high end subdivision, The Embers. It is located in perhaps the most coveted area of North East McAllen near the major thoroughfares to the hospital district, and among some of the most established higher end subdivisions. We worked with the developer to recreate a rich Mediterranean aesthetic that you experience even before entering this exclusive subdivision.
Upon entering the subdivision residents are greeted by a “fire and water” feature.
Beyond the fire and water is a grandiose archway that defines the private gate and portal to the neighborhood.
We proposed turnabouts at the main intersections of the neighborhood which allows for lush tree and landscaping that breaks up the typical suburban “dead space” between lots. We also proposed to pave the main road in masonry to again soften the experience and reduce the scale for neighborhood pedestrian traffic and replace the otherwise hot black top.
Since there really was not enough space in the development to add a park for an amentiy, we proposed taking up some of the lane width of the main street to create a “park like” boulevard rather than simply a tree lined boulevard. This setting would provide a starting or ending point for morning joggers; for others a nice place to read a book, and still others to just appreciate the naturally landscaped setting it provides. With all of these design provisions we created a truly unique subdivision concept for the developer which stands apart from other “luxury home” subdivisions not just for it’s location.

Evidently the “New Urbanist” concepts propagated from over 20 years ago still prove highly relevant in today’s sprawling American cities.
